Dos and Don'ts of Office Plants

Office plants are a great way to bring life (literally) to your office space. They are a really simple way to decorate, and if done well, they’re unobtrusive office décor. There are a few things you should definitely do with office plants, and there are a few things to consider not doing for the sake of the plant and your office neighbors.

Do Bring a Small Plant
The best office plants are small and cute. Just a small little pot for the top of your desk is really all you need.

Don't Bring a Plant That Takes Over Your Space (Or Your Neighbor’s)
If your plant is tall enough that its branches are inside your neighbor’s cubicle, there’s a problem. You’re not trying to bring a tree to work, so don’t let your plant become one.

Do Bring Colorful Flowers
Simple flowers bring a lot of color to your area, and they allow you switch up the décor every week or two. Bring some from your garden or buy them at the store and you’ll be sure to get compliments.

Don't Let the Dirt Get All Over Your Space
Make sure to keep your office area clean. If your pot seeps dirt everywhere, then it’ll make your office area look gross. You won’t like it and neither will your neighbors.

Do Put the Plant in a Colorful Pot or Vase
It’s not just about the plant or flower that you bring; it’s also about the presentation. If you bring a Wal-Mart plastic pot, the overall effect of the plant goes away. Bring a colorful pot or unique vase to do it right.

Don't Bring Plants That Cause Allergies
If your plant causes your neighbors to be sneezing all day, then your plant is a disruption. Think about you neighbors before choosing your plant.

Do Water It Often
Plants and flowers are only pretty to look at when they’re living. Keep your plant alive. Otherwise it’s pointless.

Don't Let Your Plant Die
If your plant dies, it’s just brown, ugly, and distracting. If you’re buying a plant, you have to commit to your plant.

Do Think About Your Office Neighbors
You never want to annoy your neighbors with your office décor. Make sure you bring a plant simple enough that it won’t overwhelm your coworkers.

Don't Bring a Needy Plant
When you’re buying a plant, think about what your plant will need to stay alive. If it needs lots of sunshine and water, it might not be the best plant for the office. If you think you’d ever be tempted to call a coworker to water the plant while you’re on vacation, rethink buying the plant.
