The Best 2016 Planners

Ready or not, 2016 is here -- which means you need to buy a new planner quick if you don’t already have one. Good planners can be hard to find after the first of the year when everyone is clamoring to find one, but no worries. I’ve got you covered on functional and affordable planner options.

Nicole Miller Planners

The great thing about Nicole Miller planners is that they’re easily found in your local Office Depot and on Blue Sky's website. Nicole Miller has several planner options, but there are two that stand out from the rest: The Hatch 2016 Weekly/Monthly 8X10 Bookbound Planner and Aurora 2016 Weekly/Monthly 8X5.875 Planner.

If you’re looking for a planner with a simple structure, solid materials, and tons of space for writing, then the Hatch Weekly/Monthly planner is the one for you. It has a horizontal weekly layout, tons of lined notes pages at the back of the planner, and is beyond easy to write in, thanks to the binding. There’s also no coil to stress out your writing hand.

For those who find themselves on the move constantly, I recommend the Aurora 2016 Weekly/Monthly 8X5.875 Planner. It’s a horizontal planner with a vertical weekly layout and monthly planning pages. Each month starts off with lists for things you need to do, calls you need to make, and items you need to buy. The weekly pages have lined columns for each day where you can write your schedule and the tasks you’re going to complete. Even though it comes with a highly organized layout and room to write things out, the planner is thin and compact. It’s the ideal size to throw in your bag and jet around on your excursions.

Sugar Paper Planners

We all want a pretty planner, but sometimes it takes a full-on hunt to find one that’s both functional and attractive. Sugar Paper satisfies both of these categories. The Frosted 2016 Weekly/ Monthly 8.5X11 Planner boasts a fun, unique layout and a simple, pretty design. The cream and peach color scheme keeps everything light and clean, while the individual weekly layout offers more than enough space for you to keep all of your important tasks and notes.

If you need more room to write the tasks you need to complete during the week and have a leaner schedule to write down, the horizontal, one-page weekly schedule will do just the trick. Each week has one page with horizontal rows for each day and a full notes page complete with lines, a blank column, and a dot grid. This notes page is ideal for anyone who simply needs to write down a lot of information and ideas. This layout is beneficial because you have your entire week’s schedule on one page right next to a dedicated reminder/brainstorm/work space. This makes for easy reference.

Don’t worry about not being able to find it -- this Sugar Paper planner, and the rest of the Sugar Paper line, is available through Target, and select items are also available online through Blue Sky.

Lauren Gleisberg Happy, Healthy Life Planner

If you’re looking for a comprehensive, fully organized planner, then this might just be the answer to your prayers. Lauren Gleisberg’s premier planner is available online exclusively as a printable and includes a monthly calendar, weekly layouts, and a weekly fitness and health tracking layouts. It’s designed to work for those who need to plan their daily lives and the fitness/health-centric parts of their lives as well.

Since it comes as a downloadable printable, you have full control over how much of it you print and whether or not it’s in full color or black & white. When you order the planner, you receive PDFs for a horizontal and vertical layout, three cover options, and even two health and fitness tracking-only versions.

The horizontal and vertical options offer the same features. However, the space for note taking is skewed in different ways. The vertical layout comes with long columns for you to write down tasks, which makes it easier to mark them off, while the horizontal layout has more space within each day’s row for notes than it does anywhere else. You receive both versions when you purchase the planner, so you can test them both out to see which layout works best for you.

What makes this planner most exciting is the health and fitness tracking pages that follow each week. In this portion of the planner, you can write down each meal and snack you eat, what workouts you do, which muscle group is worked each day, and your healthy goals and intentions for the week. It’s a health-conscious person’s dream.

Overall, you can’t go wrong with any of these planners. Before you select one, think about what your average day is like and determine what type of organization you need (heavy scheduling, excessive note taking, or health/fitness tracking). Be thorough and honest about your needs to make darn sure you choose the right planner to assist you through 2016. As long as you do that, and then follow through using your planner, you’ll be sure to have a productive and organized year.
