How to Become a Real Estate Agent in 5 Steps

As the real estate market is on the rise again in most states, many people are interested in becoming real estate agents. Becoming a real estate professional has many benefits, some of which include flexible hours, unlimited income potential, and the opportunity to help people in the community. Aside from the benefits of being an agent, many people like the fact that becoming an agent doesn't require years of expensive education. Here are the five steps you need to take to become licensed and begin your real estate career.

  1. Learn About Your State Licensing Requirements
Every state is different when it comes to education and licensing requirements. Most states require a specific number of classroom hours before they will allow someone to take the state licensing exam. Most states have information online that will tell you how long the coursework will take to complete and determine if you will have the time to complete the hours required.

  2. Find the Right Real Estate School
More and more people are getting their classroom hours done through distance learning. There are many real estate schools online, and you'll be able to find one that works for your state. You can still attend a school that is held at a physical location if you'd prefer that, but most schools require an upfront fee for the course, and you'll also be required to get any related textbooks or course materials.

  3. Complete the Coursework as Quickly as You Can
The nice thing about real estate schools online is that you can complete the work at your own pace. If you are eager to get your hours done and get started on your career, you can do it in a matter of two or three weeks. Once your hours and coursework are complete, you can move on to the next step in becoming an agent.

  4. Schedule a Time to Take the Real Estate Examination
Each state has an examination to determine if you are competent in the principles of real estate and the local and federal laws. Most states have two tests, the national test and a test on local state laws. You will need to locate the testing facility closest to where you live, and you will have to call in advance to schedule a test. You should plan on being there for a few hours to finish each test.

  5. Obtain Your License
Once you have completed your coursework and passed your test, you can obtain a state license to be a real estate agent. There will be a fee for obtaining your license. Once you have paid your licensing dues, you will be able to find a brokerage firm to work for and begin your career.

With a little hard work and determination, you could be a real estate agent within a month. If you enjoy sales and enjoy working with people, it can be a very rewarding career.
