Who Hires Security Guards?

Security jobs are on the rise due to increased concerns for safety and crime prevention. There are a variety of different companies and organizations that employ security guards to protect their premises. Whether you're interested in working for a private company, retailers, gaming facilities, or the government, there is likely a security position out there for you.

Finding a Job

Many jobs are found by looking at online career websites. Private companies as well as government agencies often advertise on these sites. Other places to look include online classified sites, newspapers, and on individual companies' websites. Companies often post their open positions online, accompanied by online applications.

Companies that Outsource

Many security professionals seek employment with private companies that hire security guards and then assign various jobs for clients. For example, a large charitable organization may hire you as a security guard for a single event through a private company. People working for these companies will find themselves in different situations on a regular basis. It is also possible to be assigned one job on a consistent basis. This sector of the security industry is projected to expand significantly to meet the increased need for security at events and business locations.

Retailers

Malls and shopping centers have their own security. This is perhaps the most common image that comes to mind when thinking of a security guard. Mall security officers are employed by the mall shopping center to patrol the grounds. While employed by a mall, you would be expected keep an eye out for medical emergencies, shoplifters, and disorderly conduct. Illegal activity is reported to police as needed.

Along the same lines, a loss prevention specialist typically works for a retailer. Your main responsibility in this position is to prevent shoplifting. This type of job requires attention to detail and excellent observation skills. If a customer is spotted shoplifting, you are expected to intervene and potentially detain the suspect.

Gaming Facilities

With high stakes and lots of money involved, casino and gaming facilities are in great need of security guards. This segment of the security industry is expected to expand as gambling becomes more commonplace and legalized. Security guards employed by casinos assist in transporting and refilling money at tables, detaining unruly guests, ensuring safety, and reporting illegal activity.

Government

The government also has a need for security guards. Airports are a common place to find these types of positions. Working as an airport safety officer requires you to patrol airport grounds and ensure everyone is following safety procedures. For example, you may watch for unattended baggage or cars parked in no-parking zones. You can also work as a transportation security screening officer. In this position, you are responsible for screening passengers and their luggage, preventing weapons and suspicious items from making it onto a plane.

As long as there is illegal activity and a concern for safety, there will be a need for security guards. Some positions may be more challenging than others, but they all play an important role in society. A career as a security guard can be both challenging and rewarding.
