What is SEO Copywriting?

Copywriters are skilled professionals who write ad copy for companies. Writing ad copy can happen in a number of different mediums, but examples include direct mail advertisements, commercials, brochures, website information and advertisements, etc. The copywriter’s goal is to create content that not only persuades a consumer that a product would be good for them, but good ad copy also persuades the consumer to take action and buy a product.

SEO stands for search engine optimization, and it’s a relatively new concept since the invention of the internet and search engines like Google and Bing. SEO refers to how businesses can create content that moves their website higher up on the list of a search. Websites can pay search engines to put them higher in the list, and they can also create advertisements. SEO requires that websites use keywords and make guesses at what people will search that will show their website. Having a website higher on the list in a Google search is great for business.

Some companies are devoted to creating SEO content solely for the purposes of gaining revenue from the advertisements on the page. They can do this by working with search engines to create informational content based on keyword searches. They then create advertisements for the content, and the clicks on advertisements generate money for that company. This process is a digital marketing skill, but because of the widespread use of search engines, it actually creates a lot of money.

So what is the difference between writing content for SEO companies and being an SEO copywriter? The differences are certainly subtle, but it’s important not to mistake them as being the same. SEO content writers specialize in incorporating keywords into writing. Their goals are to provide information that draws a reader to a page or an advertisement.

An SEO copywriter also wants to accomplish the same task as an SEO content writer. However, the SEO copywriter also wants to get the consumer to buy a product rather than simply clicking on advertisements. In other words, they want to create what’s called optimized copy through the creation of content. This means that SEO copywriters are trying to attract natural search traffic and also persuade readers to take action. SEO copywriters might write blog posts, product descriptions, company home pages like “Home” or “About us.” Content writers can write the same kinds of things, but they will be primarily focused on attracting visitors without necessarily calling the visitor to take action.

Essentially, SEO copywriters are also content writers. They do many of the same tasks, and they can write both content and copy. However, content writers do not write copy, so they are not copywriters.
