What is Public Relations?

The primary aim of public relations is to create the best image of a company, in order to gain and hold onto the interest of others. The success of this field relies heavily on the knowledge of their customers: what they want, what they need, and what other factors influence their decisions. People who work in public relations primarily work in publicity, upholding the best image they can in the eyes of the people. This often involves creating press releases and reaching out to different media outlets.

Public relations is becoming an increasingly popular major for college students, mainly because of the diverse level of career opportunities that are available for them after graduation. This is largely made possible by the focus of the major: developing communication skills and managing conflicts. These students will be anything from public relations representatives for companies, to journalists and everything in between. Since the jobs are so varied, so is the expected salary, but the average range for public relations majors after graduation is between $50,000 - $85,000.
