The 3 Best Truck Driving Jobs

As with jobs in any industry, there are some that tend to stand head and shoulders above others. Sometimes it's because of the variety of the job, and other times it's because of the work schedule, pay, and benefits associated with a position. Whatever type of truck-driving job you're looking for, there are three companies that over the years have established themselves as industry leaders in pay, benefits, and their dedication to treating employees and customers with fairness and respect.

United Parcel Service

UPS drivers are easily recognized by their big, brown trucks that are seen driving through towns and cities almost every day of the week. With awards such as Fortune Magazine's Most Admired Company, UPS's jobs are sought after by many drivers. Known for having perhaps the industry's strongest union, this company offers drivers excellent pay and benefits for the long hours and hard work they put into their jobs.

While many drivers work 50 to 60 hours per week and sometimes more during the holiday season, UPS is very generous for paid time off after the holidays are over. It's also known as one of the most military-friendly companies in the world, frequently hiring veterans who have truck-driving experience in the armed forces.

Schneider National

Known by the company's big, orange trucks, Schneider lets those who want to see the country do so in one of its positions around the United States. Used by two-thirds of the world's Fortune 500 companies, Schneider drivers can make close to $100,000 per year delivering loads of cargo to retailers and other businesses.

Drivers can choose to become Schneider employees or work with them through an owner-operator lease program, in which independent truckers can run their own businesses while still being affiliated with a worldwide company.

Mayflower

The nation's leading long-distance mover for more than 75 years, Mayflower is known for giving its drivers many opportunities to earn a good living. Drivers with the company particularly like the variety of this job, because they never know if they will be helping a family move cross-country or delivering equipment belonging to an international company to a new company headquarters.

One advantage Mayflower offers is giving its drivers the choice of driving locally, regionally, or nationally depending upon their career goals. Owner-operators are also welcome, with many truckers opting for this as a way to be self-employed. As with many other companies, Mayflower actively recruits military veterans with truck driving experience, and has been noted as being one of the most military-friendly companies by military publications, such as G.I. News.
