Estheticians (also known as aestheticians) are integral parts of spas, salons, and similar places that provide specialized beauty care. Laser hair removal, facials, waxes, chemical peels, among other cosmetic services, are performed by estheticians. Estheticians are not to be confused with cosmetologists, however, who work more in hair cutting, manicures, and pedicures. If you’re looking into a career as an esthetician, consider both the pros and cons of the profession.
Pro: Job Availability
Thanks to a faster-than-average job growth rate, a job as an esthetician isn’t difficult to find. Fancier spas and salons will pay better, but it will be more difficult to find a high-paying position at these places than in smaller places with plenty of entry-level positions. The training and school required for a career as an esthetician can be done in a minimal amount of time compared to a lot of other jobs. An associate’s degree or vocational school is sufficient in most places, along with proper licensing, which varies depending on the state.
Con: Low Salary
Although there are plenty of jobs, the pay isn’t great - especially for those entry-level positions that are easier to find. The median salary is around $30,000 a year. Additionally, it isn’t an easy job - there’s lots of standing and walking necessitated by the nature of the work. Although the hours are often very flexible, they’re likely going to be long, and weekends are often a requirement, as that’s when people have the time to go and get such services.
Pro: Helping People
If you like working with people, this is a great position to do just that. Clients are putting their skin and beauty into your hands, expecting to finish feeling relaxed and to look 20 years younger. Much of an esthetician’s job involves teaching and invigorating. In addition to giving microdermabrasions and cleaning out pores, you have to teach them how to continue those practices at home. Many clients are extremely grateful, and will return again and again.
Con: Getting Down and Dirty
While working with people can be rewarding, any job that is focused on the public means dealing with all the negative aspects of those people. Not everyone is as hygienic as you might hope, and you may be faced with touching some things that are far from appealing. While an esthetician’s field is that of aesthetics, the road to get there isn’t always free of dirt and blackheads. You also have to work as salesperson. Clients are only clients as long as they buy things, whether that’s a product or a service. Estheticians have to be very well versed in all manner of take-home products, and recommend the right kinds to their clients.
