Whether considering a career in medical transcription or an experienced transcriptionist wishing to improve, there are a handful of qualities that are very important. These particular skills are not only considered necessary to fulfill requirements of many of these positions, but can play a role in job satisfaction. With this being said, there are five main qualities and skills that every medical transcriptionist should have.

  1. Good Typing Skills
    A good percent of the transcriptionists time will be spent sitting at the keyboard. Therefore, typing skills should be excellent. The ideal is that not only can the individual type at a quick pace, but do so with minimal errors. This is necessary due to the large volumes of transcribing that is required for the job.
     
  2. Computer Literacy
    As with many other fields, technology has changed how medical transcription is completed. It is necessary to be comfortable in using a computer and to be familiar with different types of word processing programs or software applications that may be used. At times, research may be necessary as well.
     
  3. An Eye for Detail
    An eye for details is a must in the medical world, even for those that do not provide hands-on care. Incorrect, misspelled or otherwise inaccurate transcription can lead to many problems, including legal repercussions. The transcriptionist must be able to pay attention to the “small things” and catch mistakes.
     
  4. Ability to Multitask
    As a transcriptionist, it is required to do more than one thing at a time on a regular basis. Not only will the professional be typing, but listening as well. They may also need to research and make clarifications while performing the functions of the job. This can take both practice and patience for those just beginning to learn.
     
  5. Commitment to Professionalism
    Perhaps this is one of the most important qualities of a medical transcriptionist of any skill level, her commitment to professionalism. There are many strict laws and guidelines that pertain to sensitive information and privacy within the health care field, medical transcriptionists are legally obligated to maintain confidentiality. The information made available to complete transcribing cannot be shared.

Other Important Considerations

These are just five of the essential skills and qualities necessary of a medical transcriptionist. As with any other type of career, there are several components that contribute to this. A good understanding of medical terminology, the ability to be a self-starter and good grammar also comes with the territory.
