What is a Nanny?

Nannies take care of children of all different ages. Nannies will stay with children for several hours during the day, or even overnight, on a long-term basis. Nannies take care of children and do housework such as laundry, cleaning, and fixing meals. A benefit to hiring a nanny is that if you decide that nanny is not a good fit for your particular family needs, you can fire them and hire somebody else. The average nanny these days can make a weekly salary of close to $700.

Nanny vs. Babysitter

Nannies differ from babysitters in several ways. First, they are different because of the amount of time spent doing their job. A babysitter is hired on a short-term basis. You would hire a babysitter if you wanted to go out to dinner and a movie for a few hours. Babysitters may be used one time and never called again. Babysitters can be as young as 13 or 14 years old, and are paid by the hour. A nanny is usually hired for more long-term needs, and might be a little older. A family might need a nanny because both parents are at work and don't want to use a daycare. A nanny could also stay with a family for a month or longer while they are on a family vacation and want someone to come along to provide help with the children.

Nanny vs. Au Pair

Au pairs and nannies will do a lot of the same chores and childcare duties, but there are some key differences. Au pairs come from different countries and really become part of a family. They will participate in family activities, learn about the culture of that family, and share their own culture. You could be an au pair if you wanted to experience life in a different country for a while. Au pairs, like nannies, are paid weekly salaries. Au pairs immerse themselves in a family, whereas a nanny has more time to enjoy his or her own social life and hobbies.

There are a few different ways to become a nanny. One way is by word of mouth. Start spreading the word to friends and family that you are interested in becoming a nanny. You could pass out flyers in your neighborhood with your credentials and contact information. Another way to become a nanny is through the internet. There are many websites that can help you get started in becoming a nanny. You need to be honest about who you are and what your background and interests are so that the family you are matched up with will be a good fit for you.
